About Peoples’ Progressive Party

Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP) is a registered political Party fully operational in Uganda. It was the second political party to be registered after National Resistance Movement, when Uganda opened up political space to allow Party politics in 2004. The Party was registered as National Progressive Party (NPM), duly adopted on 7th April 2004.  In its fourth meeting held in Kampala on 28th December 2005, members of the Party unanimously resolved to change the Party name to Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP). The change of name was preceded by general notice No. 12 of 2006 by the electoral commission published in the Uganda Gazette Vol. XCVIX No. 4, which was in accordance with section 11(2) of the Political Parties and Organizations Act No. 18 of 2005. Subsequently, in General Notice No. 190 of 2006, the Electoral Commission, in the Uganda Gazette Vol. XCVIX No. 34, approved and published change of the Party name from National Progressive Movement to Peoples’ Progressive Party.
Until June 2008 when the Party held its first National Delegates Conference, the Party operated under the guidance of a veteran politician and indeed one of the out standing Ugandan politicians of this time, Jaberi Bidandi-Ssali, acting as its interim chairperson. For about two years, the interim chairman was the only official of the Party appointed by the members and tasked with popularizing, recruiting members and building a foundation for the Party. It was deliberately intended that the first ever leadership of the Party come from the peoples’ representatives in a delegates conference to provide a better foundation for the Party and set root for internal and indeed Party democracy in the Country.
In respect to this agreed position, a Delegates Conference was held from the 10th to 13th June 2008, which elected the National leadership of the Party.
